Flipping The Switch - A FuseBox Spotlight
We announced in our October Newsletter that we are super excited to be part of the FuseBox Marketing Group. Like a full-on ad agency, we offer our clients high-end marketing options to help get the best bang for their marketing bucks, with the advantages of working with individual businesses who specialize in their craft and less overhead.
My hope is that a regular Spotlight on our FuseBox colleagues with generate ideas for our readers, maybe by flipping the switch on an idea they've been thinking about, or with new ideas, tips, or techniques on things that could really help. Not to mention, introduce our trusted business colleagues.
This time around, we are spotlighting Nikki West, from Descriptive, our resident copy-writing expert. Read on to learn more about this verbose professional and what she does, in her own words. You can also find her on social media, on Facebook, and Instagram.
You can learn more about the other members of FuseBox via the FuseBox website.
Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Nikki West, the founder of Descriptive. I started Descriptive because you didn’t get into your business to write about it! I know it sounds like just a tagline, but most entrepreneurs get seriously overwhelmed by the sheer amount of written material required to run, market, and grow a successful business. I love writing, and saw an opportunity to help others while making a living from my passion.
Tell us more about your background, related to this business (where did your passion came from).
I have always been an avid reader and a natural writer, and wrote my first “novel” at 6 years old. It was about waking up and spending the day as an ant. Throughout my varied career history, I always gravitated towards tasks and roles that allowed me to support businesses using my skills as a writer.
Explain when and why you started this business.
At the start of 2017, I was working for a local company and had written a lot of marketing emails, client training plans, and operations manuals in my roles there. I went to a workshop and set an intention to making a living from my writing. At the time I thought I’d maybe figure out an amazing book idea – probably a vampire novel of some sort. I moved to a real estate admin role with a new company, where I was asked to write property descriptions. I LOVED it, but I learned that most realtors do not enjoy that part of their jobs. It was the spark that gave me the idea to start Descriptive!
How rewarding is it for you to be doing what you're doing?
It is more rewarding than I imagined when I started out. To be able to do the exact thing that I love, and then to have other people see value in it and enjoy what I create is absolutely one of the best feelings in life. I’ve also made amazing connections in the business community and I have grown as an entrepreneur and as a human over the past few years.
Who are your main customers? Who are your best customers?
I work with small to medium businesses across all industries, as well as real estate agents and brokerages. My best customers range in industry, but they all know what they are looking for and can communicate it, and then are willing to let me have a little bit of creative freedom to help them express their message and their personality.
What are you struggling with right now?
I am actually getting to the point of starting to look at bringing on my first team member, which is a scary thing! I’ll also be increasing my rates and putting out some “grab and go” packages soon, which is a surprisingly emotional and challenging mental exercise. These are pretty nice “problems” to have, and I’m so thankful for all the amazing people and clients who choose to trust me with their projects.
How can people help you at this point in your work?
I am looking to meet business owners who want to start a regular newsletter or blog, or who need several services. I would be interested in chatting about what types of packages would be of the most interest.
Do you have any special promotions or offers going on right now?
I don’t have any special promotions, but as my 2021 rate card will be changing, now is a great time to get those last few projects done before the new year!
How can people best reach you?
I am available by email, phone, text, or on social media.
