Teaching a Man To Fish
The stories of our clients' lives go on without us, creating the possibility for content their audience would love. But it would be better if that content were truly engaging!
We wanted to help our clients create their own high impact visual stories for when we can't be there. When we sat down to figure out how, we realized there is FAR TOO MUCH information for a single lesson. So we've broken it down into more easily manageable chunks.
The Best Camera
It has been said that the best camera is the one you have with you. And these days that is most often a smartphone! We have developed, and tested, a group workshop that is hands on and informative, and helps you learn the basic tools you need to take more impactful photos with the easiest camera you have on hand.
What will you learn?
- How to use your smartphone's camera to achieve better looking effects and other basic equipment skills
- Basic compositional technique that will help you produce stronger images
- Basic lighting to help your subjects look better
- And more!
Details:
- Length: about 2-3 hours
- Instruction by Gillian & Jean-Marc
- Maximum capacity live: around 20 students
The cost is $60/person. Stay tuned to our blog for dates, promotions, or special offers. Click the button below to book your spot. The next few photos were literally taken with our smartphones! It's true!
That dSLR in Your Closet
Ok so you've learned the basics from our smartphone photography workshop, and from out of the closet you've pulled your 'nice' camera that you treated yourself to several years ago, only to realize you didn't know what all the dials and buttons do. We can help with that!
While this course is more advanced, in the sense that the equipment and knowledge is more complex, it will focus on the basic understanding of the settings and dials on a proper camera. This is an interactive, hands-on group course, because everyone's dSLR will be slightly different.
What will you learn?
- Navigating your dSLR's settings and modes
- What does each button do and how does it impact the resulting photo
- Achieving special effects with those settings
- And more!
Details:
- Length: about 2-3 hours
- Instruction by Gillian & Jean-Marc
- Maximum capacity live: around 20 students

Beginner Post-Production
Taking the photo or the video is only the beginning of the art of photography or videography. There are those who feel that photos should be beautiful and usable right out the box, but we tend to disagree. 'Photoshopping' has been around since the dawn of photography, and in video in you must edit, splice, and use music, to truly tell a story. With post-production, you take your image or clips from raw material, to something that truly reflects what you are trying to say. An analogy: eating lettuce right out of the ground. Lettuce has to be post-produced, maybe by putting it in a sandwich, or adding dressing and some other ingredients to make a salad. Nobody makes friends with lettuce alone!
Workshops are available on the following topics
- Video editing with iMovie
- Basic retouching in Adobe Photoshop
- Bulk Image Editing Adobe Lightroom
- Not-So-Basic Basic Touchups for Portraits in Adobe Photoshop

Advanced
The workshops outlined so far will get you pretty far! But a bit more knowledge can really take you to the next level, and lessons can be beneficial to accelerate that process. You can do it without lessons (as Jean-Marc did, wasting a lot of film along the way!), instead learning through experience, reading, and trial and error. But that takes a very long time (Jean-Marc is getting old now). When time is so valuable, some advanced lessons from people who know practical and useful tips on how to tell stories visually will help you skip years of reading. Of course, practice is still required, as with anything in life, but if you're interested in learning more advanced knowledge, then spending time playing and practicing is probably not an issue!
For now we're considering the following lessons, subject to change and growth.
Visual Story-telling
Learn the techniques and tips in either photo or video on how to tell complete stories in a single frame, or put together a short story-telling video.
Topics can include:
- Advanced camera techniques
- Advanced composition
- Telling a story in several images
- Using music in your videos
- Planning a video shoot to tell a particular story
Post-Production
The in-camera part is only half the battle. To really tell a story with impact, some advanced knowledge is needed.
Topics can include:
- Using Adobe Premiere
- Advanced Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Lightroom

One-On-One Teaching
While group lessons are great we know not everyone learns well that way, and some people really want to accelerate the learning curve to get where they want to be. So one-on-one lessons are available for all the topics above. The length, time, topic, and intensity are all customizable. We can also do small group lessons.
Pricing may vary so please inquire, and as always, stay tuned to our blog, or inquire by email.
