Studio Lumen is growing, and we're excited to add Jeffery Borchert to our growing team of Associate Lead Wedding Photographers.
A 3rd generation Calgarian (we're glad to have a unicorn on the team!), the first thing we noticed working with Jeff is that he always seems to know someone at every shoot we'd bring him on! He's always got an amusing anecdote to share, is generally easy to be around, and super quick.
To help us, and our clients, get to know him a little more, we gave him a bit of an interrogation. Enjoy!
- What is his background, personally, creatively, educationally, training?
Jeff fell in love with photography in 8th grade while taking a class. He was intrigued by the process of capturing a moment in time, and taking that through the development of the film, and then the print. He started shooting professionally in 2005, and worked as a photographer, videographer, and editor for a local credit union.
His Bachelor of Communications and Journalism, combined with his photographic eye, artistry, and experimentation, means he is well positioned to capture your story on camera.
- What does he like about photography, even after all these years?
What Jeff still loves about photography, after so many years, is working with a client and creating images that everyone can look back on with pride. He chose to pursue photography so that he could work on things that ultimately are an expression of his and his clients' vision - to truly create and own the end result is what he loves.
- What do he like in particular about photographing people, and about weddings?
Jeff realized early on that photographing people is hard! He shied away from it until his early 20s, when he actually tried it, and discovered that it was way more fun than photographing rocks and trees. He enjoys people! And building rapport with his clients, then working with them, and directing, to create just that perfect shot.
Photographing weddings, for him, is a natural extension of all that, plus everyone is happy! All the fun, excitement, and enjoying the good times with the client, are just a bonus, and it makes for great photography.
- What inspires him in terms of photography and in general?
Jeff really loves the satisfaction of taking photos that he is proud of, especially those that provoke a reaction, or make you turn your head. He hopes when a shot wows him, it will also wow his audience. Jeff finds that at a wedding, assessing and making creative decisions quickly on-the-fly, as the live events progress, and considering the variables that go into each photo, is exhilarating - that combination of interesting experimentation and creativity.
- Why do people love working with him?
Jeff's laid-back attitude helps put people at ease - which for our style of wedding photography is important! Most people are not used to being in front of a professional lens! As everyone at Studio Lumen, he helps people be comfortable and have fun in a situation that can be uncomfortable for most.
- What does he love doing in his spare time?
- Building nerdy model kits - Gundam style
- Making his wife Kristin really good breakfasts - he's particularly passionate about this, and figured out how to make the best home-made shredded hashbrowns, like at Phil's or Waffle House in the US
- Watching any TV show that has Star in its title - Star Trek, Stargate, Starwars, Battlestar Galactica. Goes well with his nerdy model kit hobby.
- What are you really really good at?
- Remembering random facts
- Confident decision-maker - no humming and hawing
